BE THE PERSON A CHILD REMEMBERS
You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to be willing to show up.
At Rockford Youth, Sports and Mentor, we believe one dependable adult can make an incredible difference in the life of a young person.
Sometimes it’s a coach who refuses to give up on a child.
Sometimes it’s a mentor who listens when nobody else seems to.
Sometimes it’s a mechanic who teaches a teenager how to change a tire.
A cook who teaches a child how to prepare their first meal.
A business owner who explains how they built their career.
An artist who helps a young person discover a talent they didn’t know they had.
Or simply an adult who consistently says:
“I see you. I believe in you. Keep going.”
THIS PROGRAM STARTED WITH FATHERS WHO WANTED TO GIVE BACK
Rockford Youth, Sports and Mentor grew from a simple idea among a group of single fathers:
What if we gave our time to create the kinds of opportunities we would want for our own children?
We’re fathers first.
We’re community members who understand that raising children takes more than programs, buildings and equipment. Young people need people.
People who listen.
People who teach.
People who encourage.
People who hold them accountable.
And most importantly, people who keep showing up.
We’re inviting Rockford to show up with us.
YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A COACH
Sports are only one part of what we’re building.
Maybe you know how to cook.
Maybe you work on cars.
Maybe you’re an electrician, carpenter, plumber or welder.
Maybe you’re a teacher, college student, artist, healthcare professional, entrepreneur, first responder, business owner or retiree.
Maybe you’re great with computers.
Maybe you love fishing, hiking or camping.
Maybe you’ve overcome difficult circumstances and have lessons that could help a young person navigate their own challenges.
Or maybe you simply have patience, compassion and time to give.
There’s a place for that here.
SHARE WHAT YOU KNOW
Imagine a young person rotating through our programs and meeting adults from throughout the community.
One week they’re learning soccer.
Another they’re learning how to prepare a meal.
They’re learning how a car works, how credit works, how to build a résumé and how to interview for a job.
They’re hearing from electricians, entrepreneurs, college graduates, tradespeople and community leaders.
They’re visiting colleges, workplaces, museums and outdoor spaces.
They’re discovering that there isn’t just one path to a successful life.
Sometimes you don’t know what you’re capable of becoming until you meet someone who shows you what’s possible.
That’s what we want our volunteers to help provide.
YOUR TIME HAS VALUE
You don’t have to volunteer every day.
You might coach for a season.
Mentor once a week.
Teach one workshop.
Speak to teenagers about your career.
Help with one field trip.
Serve meals at an event.
Help set up equipment.
Teach a practical skill.
Or volunteer behind the scenes.
An hour of your time could become a lesson a child carries for years.
MORE THAN VOLUNTEERS. A COMMUNITY AROUND OUR CHILDREN.
Our long-term vision is bigger than filling volunteer positions.
We want young people to grow up surrounded by a network of adults who want to see them succeed.
And eventually, we want the children participating today to come back as tomorrow’s:
Coaches. Mentors. Volunteers. Professionals. Business owners. Parents. Community leaders.
That’s how the cycle continues.
Someone invests in you.
You grow.
Then you reach back and invest in someone else.
HELP US BUILD THAT CYCLE IN ROCKFORD.
You don’t need to have all the answers.
You don’t need a fancy title.
You just need something positive to give.
Your knowledge.
Your experience.
Your encouragement.
Your patience.
Your skills.
Your time.
Sometimes showing up is where changing a life begins.
READY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
BECOME A VOLUNTEER
Tell us what you know. Tell us what you love. Tell us how you’d like to help—and we’ll work to find a place where your time can matter.
And then I’d include a small safety section farther down the page:
OUR COMMITMENT TO YOUTH SAFETY
The safety and well-being of participating youth comes first. Submitting a Volunteer Interest Form does not automatically authorize an individual to work directly with children.
All volunteers must successfully complete applicable background screening before being approved for direct youth-facing responsibilities. Additional training, screening, supervision and youth-safety requirements may apply depending on the volunteer role.
